Hi! I’m Jilly from Baby Sleep Made Simple.

The video you’re about to watch is me answering a question sent in by a tired mom, on our Facebook Live Q&A Call. I hope you enjoy it!

“My baby naps only when I hold him! I want to get him on a newborn nap routine! What can I do?”

For a young baby like this, I don’t believe that we can use strict methods to help him sleep well or nap well. I think you have to do whatever it takes to help your baby nap well. Especially naps can be quite difficult for young babies.

Sleep Props to Help Your Baby Nap:
I would use a few different sleep props to help your little one sleep well.

Swaddle Blankets
First of all, if your baby is this young, I definitely encourage you to swaddle your baby. Not with a loose blanket, but there are so many different swaddle blankets that are available these days. You can just go on Amazon and see so many! I love the Miracle Blanket. You can get Aden & Anais blankets. You can get Halo. But I would specifically get a swaddle blanket.

It swaddles your baby like a traditional swaddle would. But the beautiful thing about these swaddle blankets or sleepsacks is that they stay put! A lot better than a loose blanket that you sort of wrapped your baby in. Young babies love contained environments! So I’d definitely try that. Then she might even sleep in her basket while swaddled.

Baby Carrier
But what I would also do, if she’s just not having any of it and she’s getting used to sleeping in your arms, you could definitely use a baby carrier. Any sort of carrier, like a Moby or an Ergo or a Baby Bjorn. I would use one of the carriers where their legs aren’t really dangling out, because that doesn’t really help babies to sleep well. They like to be quite contained. So make sure you get a carrier where your baby is quite snug.

Swing/Vibrating Chair
You can also use a swing or a vibrating chair. I would use any of these props to help her sleep. More than likely, motion will help her sleep. As long as you supervise her naps, you can turn the swing on or the vibrating chair. I would do that for now.

I hope that that helps! You have full permission to use motion and props for naps. Because your little one is quite young. It wouldn’t be until about 6 months that I’d recommend trying to get her napping consistently in her crib twice a day. Right now she’s going to nap so often, it’s OK to do whatever it takes.

So good luck with that! Let me know if you have any other questions!
